Description from user:

I inherited these from my grandparents house. I’ve been told they are true Louis xiv and not reproductions. There is some wear and tear shown in the pictures. They could use a restuffing. Some of the paint is chipped, the cushions have moderate wear and tear. There is also one spot on the side of one of them where my friend’s cat came to visit and clawed it.

What does this mean?

Hi Sansa,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The aesthetics inspired by Louis XV (1715-1774) enjoyed a renaissance in the late 19th Century, which was when these chauffeuses (armless chairs) were made. While technically reproductions, they are still antiques and, in many cases, were made better than those in the mid/late 18th Century when the king was still alive.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A pair of antique Louis XV style double wingback chauffeuses
French, late 19th Century
Each with carved giltwood frame with two seat backs with outset wings, shaped front rail, raised on six short carved and giltwood cabriole legs. The frame and corresponding squab cushion upholstered in a watered floral blue silk. Unmarked.
each 32 inches tall, 44 inches wide, 32 inches deep
CONDITION: With some minor wear commensurate to age and use.
PROVENANCE: Inherited
$1,500-2,500 for the pair*
