Description from user:

carved heavy wood with original, believed handmade upholstery, with an elegant stiched pattern. Was inherited from my Great-Grandmother, who owned a furniture store in Atlamntic City that went out of business in the great depression.

Inherited from G Granmother. Probably of American origin. Some of her stuff was French, but not a lot. Pre-WW2.

What does this mean?

Hi Mark,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
This chair would have been used in a sitting room or parlor rather than in a dining room, where the costly silk upholstery would have been at risk from being stained by food.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

An antique Victorian style carved mahogany open balloon-back armchair
American or European, possibly late 19th Century
The circular "balloon" back with inset cream silk upholstery flanked by part-upholstered arms on shaped supports, over a shield-shaped part-upholstered seat, all raised on short cabriole legs.
40 inches high by 24 inches wide by 26 inches deep
CONDITION: appears to be in good condition, possibly refinished and reupholstered.
PROVENANCE: inherited
