What does this mean?

Dear Jonathan,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

Please find below a description along with an estimate of two works which appear to be by the Japanese artist Takashi Nakayama (1893-1978).

Pair of watercolors on paper
Japan, Taisho period (1912-1926)
Signed on the lower left
Detailed painting of a farmer carrying a basket and of a rickshaw drawn by one man.
Sight: 12 1/2" x 6"
Framed: 19 3/8" x 13"

These two detailed watercolors on paper by Takashi Nakayama date back to the Meiji or Taisho period (1912-1926) in Japan and were presumably made for the foreign market. They were inspired by the western style and happened to be extremely popular in Europe and the USA in the early 20th century.

They are both in good condition with some signs of age and wear on the reverse, and the frames appear to be in good condition.

The estimation in red is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables.

Best regards,

Karine
