Description from user:

Extremely old, Large wooden frame 22"W x 23 1/4"H x 3"D with canvas painting on separate, circular inset board 13 1/4" diameter which varies from 3/8" to 1/2" thick. It is a single piece board. Lots of damage to both frame and painting as depicted in attached photos. No visible signature or other writing. Old piece of paper glued to back of circular inset that may contain faded writing.

Handed down in Nugent family for generations. Believe it came from family chateau (Le Chateau Des Mesnuls owned by the Countess Nugent (nee Leroy de Carmilly) from 1839-1914) near Montfort-l'Amaury, France in mid 1800s. My family are direct descendants of Nugent.

What does this mean?

Dear George,

Thank you for your help and patience. My sincere apologies for the delay with the appraisal.

The presented object appears to be a painting made in oil paint on canvas with the measurements of 22"W x 23 1/4" including the frame and with a diameter of 13 1/4" for the tondo. It depicts Mary embracing the child Christ, while the young John the Baptist devoutly watches This round tondo painting is a copy of the famous "Madonna della seggiola" painted by Raphael around 1513/1514 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madonna_della_seggiola). This iconic artwork was copied in numerous times in the 18th and 19th centuries. The canvas is fixed on an oak wood frame and appears to be probably made in the 18th century.
This piece is in medium condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 2.000 to 5.000 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.

With kind regards,
Georg
