Description from user:

These are intact print sheets (printer's proofs) from two of Bemelman's books which have been framed. One book is a circus theme.

My mother was a book dealer and a rare and well illustrated children's book expert. She had found these and I had them framed. She passed away in 1986, so they have been in our family at least that long.

What does this mean?

Hello Kathleen,

Thank you for your appraisal inquiry with Mearto. The item presented appears to be photo-offset lithographs displaying scenes after illustrations by Ludwig Bemelmans (Austrian/American, 1898 - 1962). Bemelmans was a write and illustrator for children's books, most notably, "Madeline." Many of the scenes depicted appear to be from the "Madeline" books. One sheet appears to include a facsimile signature to the lower margin.

While another example of these exact prints are not found in recent auction records, the estimate provided is based on recent auction estimates and results of other comparable photo-offset lithographs after illustrations by Bemelmans, with a focus on "Madeline" scenes. The estimate is for the group of two sheets and is contingent on a full condition report. Please note asking or dealer prices may vary. Thank you and please take care.
