No idea about the history behind. We bought it in a Estate Sale.

This is a lovely 19th-century portrait of a child with a bird in the sea. It measures 20 x 14 inches. It is signed on the reverse and dated 1881. The condition is excellent except for some signs of craquelure that I can see on the canvas.
Unfortunately, after searching Henry L. Smith (sometimes artists do sign on the reverse of their work), I am sorry to say that I could not find any similar artist's signature in our records.
Therefore, this is is reflected in the estimate in red that appears above. The subject work’s size and composition were also taken into consideration when determining these figures.
