Description from user:

Hello, We have a Holton-Clarke long model cornet from (based on the serial number 63527) 1928. It’s in great shape though it needs a cleaning. The case which is original is a bit battered, it needs cleaning and the handle is broken. It comes with 2 mouthpieces and a lyre, and some sort of hook piece. The value of these instruments varies dramatically depending on serial number and model.

It was found hidden in a home we purchased in Oregon. The home is only 20 years old. I don’t know a lot about the people who owned it previously, they were older and wealthy and from a large family.

What does this mean?

Hi Tara,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
I've found some H-C cornets on eBay with fairly high prices but have to take those with a grain of salt because eBay sellers won't reveal what they actually sell things at; in many / most cases, items are prices high with the expectation of negotiating a selling price. A couple of circa 1920s H-C cornets I've found having sold at auction in the past few years all seem to be in a similar condition and all sell below $500, most in the $150-250 range.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A near antique Holton-Clarke brass long cornet
made in Elkhart, Indiana
Serial number 63527, made in 1928
Along with a hard case, two mouthpieces, a lyre-form music stand and a hook
Approximately 20 inches long
CONDITION: case is battered and handle is broken; cornet is reportedly in good condition but in need of cleaning
PROVENANCE: acquired with a home purchase
$150-250*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.
