What does this mean?

Dear Chris,

Thank you for your help and patience.

The presented object appears to be a Civil War period officer's sword of the Medical Staff with the scabbard. It was introduced in the year 1840 and is known under the name "Medical Staff Sword" on the market. The blade is etched with the US eagle and holds the devise "E Pluribus Unum" and the brass hilt is monogrammed MS for Medical Staff.
This piece is in medium condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 600 to 1.000 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.

With kind regards,
Georg
