Description from user:

This painting was owned by a retired Naval officer who brought it to his home in Arkansas. My mother acquired it in 1980 and it has been displayed in her home in Arkansas until her death in 2016. The outside frame dimensions are: 27-3/4" high x 19-1/2" wide x 3/4" thick. The exposed art, under the glass and inside of the frame have a dimensions of: 25-1/2" high x 17-5/16" wide. Under magnification you can see the fine brush strokes. The wooden back is held in the frame by wooden pegs. I looked under the backing and the art is painted on paper (silk?) and not painted on the glass itself.

What does this mean?

Hello Carolyn,

Thank you for your appraisal inquiry with Mearto. The item presented appears to be an ink painting known as an ancestral portrait painting. The subject appears to be Aisin Gioro Hongli (愛新覺羅 弘曆) otherwise known as the Qianlong Emperor. You can read more about him here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qianlong_Emperor

While the painting depicts the Qianlong Emperor, it was more likely produced sometime after his death, likely during the late 19th century, based on the condition and materials used. The estimate provided is based on recent auction estimates and results of other comparable ancestral portrait paintings of the Qianlong Emperor. The estimate is contingent on a full condition report. Please note asking or dealer prices may vary. Thank you and please take care.
