Description from user:

54 Gauze panel with 6 square humanoids, in black and burgundy with crosses. 103x64 cm. Inherited pre-columbian thinly woven Chancay artwork textile tapestry. Tapestry is held together on a canvas sheet that can be removed from the artwork. Collection by descent which belonged to Dr. Jose Rivadeneyra Leon who passed away on March of 2021 in Lima. The piece was collected by family for aesthetic purposes.

Had been collected through the years by grandfather and by my great grandfather Engr. Julio Rivadeneyra who lived in northern Peru central coast near Chiclayo. They have been privately purchased and/or gifted by family members who loved collecting like his cousin, Carlos Williams Leon who was a Peruvian architect and archeologist. https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Williams_Le%C3%B3n

Hello Meggie,

I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,

Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knitted Piece of Textile Belonging to The Chancay Culture. The piece is a Gauze Panel. The piece is entirely coloured with natural dyes. The knitting is quite unique in terms of style and traditional to the Chancay Culture. The piece dates back to the period from 11th century to 14th century. The piece is composed of two rows of horizontally aligned humanoid figures depicted geometrically as usual to the known textile works from the culture. There are six visible human motifs connected from the hands and with "plus" motifs between the figures, likely as a way to highlight the connection of people in a spiritual sense. The piece was collected originally by Dr. Jose Rivadeneyra Leon, who resided in Peru at the time. The piece appear to be in good condition with signs of age and signs of storing technique. Folding may have damage the piece previously.
