Description from user:

Unsure if it's a secretary desk or gradin. I gave it a "quick cleaning" prior to taking the pictures, and due to the intricate woodwork, I will need some time to clean properly. It is good condition, but with several surface scratches and wear along the back edge. Should I opt to sell, it will not be before I've had a chance to learn the value, and complete restoration.

This desk was used as furniture and a prop in my families portrait business which started in 1920. I'm 67, and it's been there as long as I have, but unfortunately I did not learn the history.

What does this mean?

Hi David,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
This is a nice piece of furniture but the market for it is pretty soft at the moment - more supply than demand, which keeps the value relatively soft.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A vintage Gothic Revival carved oak escritoire
American or European, probably second quarter 20th Century (1925-1950)
Of rectangular section, the corresponding top with partial lunette-carved railing and fitted with two small drawers, on a trestle base with shaped foliate-carved brackets.
34 inches high, 45 inches wide, 17 inches deep
CONDITION: appears to be in generally good condition with some wear commensurate to age and use.
PROVENANCE: inherited
$300-500*
