What does this mean?

Hi Diane,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
This is a beautiful cabinet - the use of marquetry veneers is quite successful and while this is large it does not have an overpowering presence, which is often the case with German furniture.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

An antique Baroque walnut marquetry and gilt metal mounted stepback cupboard
European, probably German, late 18th/early 19th Century
Of rectangular section and in two parts. The upper stepback with molded cornice over an illuminated mirrored case fitted with an outset glazed door flanked by recessed glazed panels flanked by quarter columns and fluted rear stiles, on paneled box base fitted with outset central short drawer, the lower section with outset flat-edged top over two short over two long drawers, all raised on short toupie feet.
Overall height 76 inches
width of upper section 38-1/2 inches
Width of lower section: 46-1/2 inches
Depth of upper section: 16 inches
Depth of lower section: 20-7/8 inches
CONDITION: This cabinet appears to be in very good condition. Lighting elements should be later additions.
PROVENANCE: Previously purchased at auction in the 1970s, thence by descent.
$800-1,200*
