Hello Cornelia,

I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,

Considering the photographs, overall pattern, materials and the colours, I concluded that this is the upper part of an English Antique Dog Grate used mostly for Edwardian Fireplaces. The piece is made of iron, iron cast. The piece depicts a cavalier on a rearing horse. The piece was composed of two parts originally, this was the decorative fireplace covering. The piece was used on fireplaces that are not very well established or decorated during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The piece's aim was to create a full and equipped fireplace look to the viewer. The piece was made by Thomas Elsley, a famous producer of these in the 19th century. The piece dates back to the period from 1875 to 1995. The piece has initials 'CR' on it. The piece is in need of restoration with heavy oxidation on both faces and residue.

Iron Cast.

Dimensions: 23 Inches by 21.5 Inches by 1 Feet

Condition: The piece is in need of restoration with heavy oxidation on both faces and residue.

Provenance: Inherited from the current owner's father, who brought it to America from England.

250-500$.
