Description from user:

African Carved Wood Statue of Mother Breastfeeding Her Baby Beautiful hand-carved mother nursing infant, has some cracks as can be seen in the pictures. Was told it was from Africa when I purchased it (through eBay) but not what region. Not sure of what type of wood it is but it is fairly light.

This hand-carved nursing mother and infant statue is from Africa, although I don't know what region. It was acquired through eBay.

Hi Anne,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
This is probably from the Akuaba area of Southern Ghana and the Fanti people, though it looks like it was made for the export (ie tourist) market in the 20th Century, with more decorative than historic value.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A vintage Fanti carved mother and child group
Akuaba area of Southern Ghana, 20th Century
The carved hardwood figure depicting a mother and nursing child seated on a stool, the back with incised markings and with white highlights throughout.
15 3/4 inches tall
CONDITION: appears to be in generally good condition with some embellished patina.
PROVENANCE: acquired from eBay seller
