Description from user:

A very old violin or fiddle with original case. Strings are still attached. 2 of the wands w/strings attached.

It came from my Grandfather. I would guess it to be at least 50 years old.

What does this mean?

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. Based on the photographs and description provided, the subject of this appraisal is a fiddle by an unknown maker, circa early 20th century, with a wooden case and two bows.

The fiddle features painted embellishments and inlays, and shows extensive playwear. A significant split is present on the top at one of the f-holes, indicating storage in sub-optimal conditions.

According to the current owner, the piece was acquired via inheritance.

Comparable fiddles from the early 1900s routinely sell via secondhand resellers such as reverb.com in the $200 to $300 price range without the splitting issue noted here. In consideration of the factors described, a Fair Market Value (pre-auction estimate) of this piece would be estimated at $100 to $200.
