What does this mean?

Hi Deborah,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

What an unusual lamp! The figures are headrests though it's curious why there would be three together on a single base. Also, the brass planter doesn't seem to really fit on to the supports. I wonder if this wasn't assembled into a lamp from separate pieces (its very common for Chinese urns and vases to be later fitted into lamps) that originally did not have anything to do with each other? That would really be the only explanation I can come up with as to how this lamp came to be.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

An assembled African glazed pottery and brass pedestal lamp
20th Century, possibly from earlier elements.
Inverted milk glass shade over single columnar support over a circular brass planter raised on a green glazed pottery base with three figural headrests in the form of tribal figures, all on a circular wooden(?) base. Electrified.
30 inches tall
CONDITION: appears to be in good condition
PROVENANCE: acquire at auction
$150-250*
