What does this mean?

Hello April,

I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,

Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an entirely hand knotted Caucasian Rug, made in around 1940-1960 period. Caucasian Rugs are the type of rugs that has a nomadic origin. These were used by the locals of Caucasia for more than a thousands years now. You can detect some characteristic features like the colour of the warp. It is a dark and natural colour of the wool. Coming from a sheep type that Caucasian villages tend to have. This can be from a wide range area from Turkey’s City of Kars to Daghestan.

The decoration has a central medallion, which shows a scorpion and surrounding patterns. Ram horns are visible all over the piece, Ram Horn pattern is known as the most heavily used motif in Caucasian Rugs. Also the characteristic flowers are visible through the decoration. Ram horn resembles fertility and power while the flowers resemble the beauty and the nature. Star motifs are also noticable especially on the border decoration. They do resemble a bright future. Piece is knotted wool on wool. Very collectible with signes of use and age.

Entirely hand knotted.

Dimensions: 5 Feet x 7 Feet

Condition: In need of restoration, one hole and loses on fringes.

Provenance: Purchased second hand

Heavily decorated by traditional Caucasian Patterns.

400-500$.
