Description from user:

I purchased these two oil (on canvas) paintings at a yard sale. They look to me to be 19thc American School Folk art, however the markings on the back of the frames say "Made in Italy".. They are unsigned which I know is normal for paintings out of that time. Any info anyone could give would be greatly appreciated. Dimensions: Canvas: 18" x 22" Frame: 22" x 26"

These were previously owned by the parents of the man who sold them to me. He said his parents traveled a lot and were most likely purchased in Italy.

What does this mean?

Dear Brynn,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

The presented object appears to be a pair of paintings made in oil paint on canvas with the measurements of 22 x 18 inches. The painting depicts a young couple in costumes of the 19th century. These paintings were made in the 20th century imitating an older style and the surface of the painting appears to show traces of an artificial aging process. The depiction of the facial features is strongly stylized and the canvas appears in its structure to be from the 20th century. This fits the "Made in Italy" remark on the frame.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 150 to 300 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.

With kind regards,
Georg
