Hello Mary,

I’m glad that you chose Mearto for your appraisal. Please accept our apologies for the delay!

Considering the photographs, overall pattern, painting quality and the mark,
I concluded that this is a beautiful pair of Japanese Kutani ware vase from 1930’s. The mark
underneath is the Kutani mark but written a bit careless, also the colour green is rarely used in these
kind of pieces. Definitely not made for exporting purposes, so this checks out with the idea that
someone brought it from Japan. Export quality Kutani ware are usually decorated with less effort and
precision. Also the bird motifs are a proof of both time and the Kutani design since birds were a
common composition among Kutani artists between 1920’s till 1940’s. Also the your dating checks
out since the pieces are in a very good condition for their age, so they should be very newly made
around 1940.

Condition: Excellent condition without any visible chips or cracks

Provenance: Brought to United States from Japan by a soldier in 1940.
Entirely hand painted. Piece’s decoration is heavily dominated by bird motifs. Also the smooth wave
design are very neat and represents a high quality work for the period. Overall a quality piece from
1930’s.

350-500$ for the pair.
