The presented object appears to be a painting made in oil on canvas with the measurements of 170 x 160 cm including the frame. The painting shows a typical depiction of the "Last Supper" scene with Jesus Christ in the middle, John the Apostle to his left, and Simon Petrus to his right. John is identifiable because of his iconography as the youngest of the Apostles and Simon Petrus because of his bald head. All other apostles sit on the same side of the table and on the opposite side of the table Judas Iscariot is shown with the 30 pieces of silver in a moneybag fixed to his belt. The cutout and the composition and the fact that not all of the Apostles are shown indicate the painting was once bigger and was reduced in size. The depiction of the facial features, the costumes, and the style indicate an influence of the artworks of the Francken family. An attribution to Ambrosius I FRANCKEN (1544-1618) or Ambrosius II FRANCKEN (act.1616-1632) is not to follow. The composition, the depiction of the costumes, and the richness of the scenery are not comparable with works of the numerous members of the Francken family. Besides that worked Ambrosius I FRANCKEN (1544-1618) mainly on copper or panel. Ambrosius II FRANCKEN (act.1616-1632) rarely worked in oil on canvas but his paintings differ in the quality of the depiction and especially in the richness of costumes, architectural decorations. This painting was probably made by a follower of the Francken family perhaps in Antwerp. This attribution to a follower excludes the provenance to a church of Dendermonde (Belgium).
This piece is in bad to medium condition and there are large-area restorations visible in the images provided. Especially the face of Christ is strongly damaged and in comparison, the apostle to the left shows the former quality of this painting.
A fair market estimation would be between 1.500 to 3.000 USD.
